Betty Ashenfelter, 89 of Corning, Iowa entered eternal rest Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Corning Specialty Care. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, March 25, 2022 at Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center in Corning. Pastor Mary O’Riley will officiate. Visitation with Family receiving friends will be 9:30-10:30 Friday, prior to the service. A private interment will be at a later date. Betty Lou Ashenfelter was born in Lorimor, Iowa on October 21, 1932, the daughter of Walter Stewart and Virgie Ada (Clark) Hartman. She was raised in Creston, Iowa and educated in the Creston Public Schools, graduating with the Class of 1950. In the Fall of 1949, Betty met Richard “Dick” Ashenfelter at a Corning vs. Creston Football game on a blind date. They were married on April 22, 1950 in Creston and made their home in Corning. To this union, 4 children were born: Janet, Susan, Larry and Donald.
When she was first married, Betty worked as a Cashier in Corning at Hy-Vee and later at Turner’s Department Store. In 1966, Betty began working with Dick at Ashenfelter Repair. In 1968, they purchased the business and worked side by side for 48 years. Due to Dick’s failing health, they closed the business in 2013 and he passed away a few months later. Betty lived most of her life in Corning and resided at Corning Specialty Care the last 4 years of her life. Betty always said her favorite job was being a mom!
Betty was a past member of the Archery Club of Corning and won 1st place during a competition, even beating the men in the club. She was baptized in the First Christian Church of Corning.
Preceding Betty in death was her husband, Dick Ashenfelter; her son, Larry Ashenfelter; infant son, Allen Ashenfelter; her parents; step-grandson, Mason Potter; 2 brothers: Stewart Hartman and Eugene Springer; 2 sisters: Audrey Townsend and Virgie Quinn.
Betty is survived by her daughters: Janet (husband John, Sr.) Buzzard of Shenandoah, Iowa and Susan (husband Ron) Hickman of Grandview, Missouri; her son, Donald (wife Dawn) Ashenfelter of Corning, Iowa; 7 grandchildren: Carissa (Jeremy) Johnson, John (Sally) Buzzard, Jr., Lee Hutchison, Jason Buzzard, Sayard (Jimi) Potter, Logan Ashenfelter and Justin (Doni) Buzzard; 9 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Georgia Springer of Fairbury, Nebraska; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
