Donald Wayne Schaffer was born November 14, 1925 in Carbon, Iowa, the son of Carl Edward Schaffer and Esther Mariah O’Riley Schaffer. Donald passed away on Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He had reached the age of eighty four years, five months and four days.
Donald attended school in Carbon and Pierce School in the Gus area. Donald served in the United States Navy during WWII from December 28, 1943 to May 26, 1946 at which time he was Honorably Discharged.
Donald was united in marriage to Larene Chester of Cumberland, Iowa on July 8, 1946. Three children were born to this union: Roger (Dorothy) Schaffer of Loveland, Colorado, Barbara Terry of Mesa, Arizona and Sally Schaffer of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The family lived in Adams County where Donald farmed and worked in the coal mines at Carbon, Iowa. Donald was also employed by Adams County, building bridges, Schildberg Construction Company and Nodaway Valley Foods, Inc. in Corning.
Donald is survived by his ex-wife, Larene Schaffer of Urbandale, Iowa; two daughters; a son; a daughter-in-law; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Marjorie Rockwell and brother-in-law Robert; two sisters-in-law: Lucille Schaffer of Casper, Wyoming and Ruth Schaffer of Carbon, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents: Carl and Esther Schaffer; his step-father, Homer Houck; four brothers: Edward, Clifford, Cecil and Clark; three sisters: Valentine (Clyde) McHenry, Glenna (Fudge) Holdren and Doris Schaffer, who died in infancy.
