Doris Gayle O’Riley was born to Anna Mae (Mateer) and Herbert James O’Riley on February 24, 1921 at Mount Vernon, South Dakota. Doris joined her much loved family and entered eternal rest on March 24, 2014 at the Creston Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Creston, Iowa at the age of ninety-three years, and one month.
Following the death of her mother in South Dakota, the family moved to a farm in Union County in 1931. An aunt, Nada Sammons, lived with them to care for the children. Doris attended and graduated from Creston High School in 1939. In 1954, Doris moved to Creston with her father and sister, Doreen, and resided in that house for 56 years.
Doris worked as a machine operator at Gits Manufacturing in Creston for 32 ½ years, retiring in 1987. Doris was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and Women’s Club. Doris enjoyed gardening, crocheting and crafting, and along with her sister Doreen, made many gifts for family and friends. After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling on trips that were sponsored by the First National Bank, including Switzerland, Hawaii and Alaska, among others.
Left to mourn Doris’ passing are her nephews: Jeffery (Margaret) Bada, Encinitas, CA; Stephen (Sheryl) O’Riley, Minonk, IL; Craig (Sandy) O’Riley, Ames, IA; and Kirk (Sheila) O’Riley, Lenox, IA; a niece, Beverly Kelly, Upland, CA; a niece-in-law, Sue Baker, Waukee, IA; twelve great nieces and nephews; and sixteen great-great nieces and nephews.
Preceding Doris in death were her parents; brothers: Albert O’Riley and Wayne O’Riley; sisters: Hazel Bada and Doreen O’Riley; brother-in-law, Richard Bada; sisters-in-law: Emma O’Riley and Betty O’Riley; nephew, Gordon O’Riley; and aunt, Nada Sammons.
