Edward Harvey, 90, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at EveryStep Hospice House in Creston. Memorial contributions may be directed to: St. Malachy School &/or Southwestern Community College Scholarship Fund.
Edward “Ed” Thomas Harvey, Jr. was born in Creston, Iowa on March 15, 1930 to Edward Thomas Harvey, Sr. and Loretta Mary (Howe) Harvey. Ed and his younger sister, Helen Ann Harvey, were raised and educated in Creston. Ed graduated from Creston High School in 1947. He worked as a call boy for the railroad and attended Creston Junior College. Ed served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean War. He then returned back to college and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics as well as his Juris Doctor at Creighton University in 1958. After being admitted into both the Nebraska Bar and Iowa Bar he returned to Creston for a short time working with Attorney Deg Reynolds. On August 22, 1959 Ed married Sarah Joan “Sadie” Ries in Des Moines, Iowa. They moved to Des Moines where he worked for National Grain Dealers Association as legal counsel and Sadie worked as a pediatric nurse. In 1960, Ed and Sadie moved to Osceola where Ed practiced law with Ward Reynoldson and Bob Kilmar. During this time Ed and Sadie had two daughters born, Ann Marie and Sheila Jane. Ed and Sadie were caregivers of many elderly family members and in 1966 moved to Creston where Ed joined lawyers, Tom Mullin, Don Mullin, and Bill McLaughlin. Sadie continued to work as a nurse in Creston. After returning to Creston, Loretta Leigh was born. Ed and Sadie continued to work and be involved in many activities in Creston. They poured their hearts and souls into many projects for St. Malachy Church and school as well as Holy Spirit Parish. Sadie passed away in 1998 after a long battle with cancer. On September 29, 2006 Ed married Donna Wood at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Ed and Donna made their home in Creston and were both faithful members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Ed continued to practice law with Loretta through 2019.
Ed was a former member of the Creston American Legion and a current member of the VFW Theodore J. Martens Post #1797. He served as a member of the Knights of Columbus and was active in the Holy Spirit Parish. Ed was also a member of the Creston Elks Lodge and a long-time member of the Iowa State Bar Association.
Ed is survived by his wife, Donna; his three daughters: Ann Harvey, Sheila (Greg) Parks, Loretta (Aaron Finch) Harvey; his three grandchildren: Cara Parks, Stuart Parks, Briana Parks; his two great grandchildren: Myla Parks and Oliver Parks; his stepchildren: Michael (Lijun) Wood, Teri (Stephen) Veysey, Scott (Vicky) Wood, Russell Wood, Maria (Mark) Johnson, and Annette (Dave) Heaton; many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; and many cousins, friends, colleagues and clients.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie, in 1998; his parents in 1949 and 1977; his sister, Helen, in 2019; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
