Evelyn Genevieve Peterson Odson, the only daughter of Henry and Julia Peterson, was born November 22, 1915 in Douglas Township, Adams County, Iowa. Evelyn entered eternal rest on Friday, February 23, 2007 at the Villisca Good Samaritan Nursing Home at the age of ninety-one years, three months and four days.
Evelyn grew up in the Norwegian community of Strand, (she was a full blooded Norwegian), with a younger brother, Harold. She lived in Adams County most of her life, attending country school and then Corning High School for two years.
On November 22, 1934, Evelyn was united in marriage to another “full blooded Norwegian”, Elmo Odson, son of Edward and Matilda Odson. To this union, three daughters were born, Marilyn, Sherry and Janice. In later years they made a home for three grandchildren, Matt, Terri, and Mark Johnston.
Some of her jobs away from home included helping a neighbor cook for farm or road workers. She also cooked at Tenville several years and then at the Villisca Country Club. She was often asked to sing at funerals. All of her life she lived on a farm. She worked in the field with her husband, always had a large garden and canned the surplus for the winter.
Evelyn spent Wednesdays at church quilting to help prepare for the yearly church bazaar. She also enjoyed the neighborhood get-togethers after a busy work week, playing cards, having parties for many occasions, wedding showers, birthdays, etc. Saturday night all the neighbors met in town. The kids went to the show, the women to the grocery store and then visited until the movie ended. Then all headed for the old house near the Rand Ranch to dance and socialize. She enjoyed her flowers and bird watching, but didnt enjoy the squirrel that got in the bird seed. Evelyn loved her family dearly and enjoyed trips with both family and friends. Evelyn resided with Mark and Theresa Johnston for eighteen months before entering the nursing home.
Evelyn is survived by three daughters: Marilyn (Jerry) Barnard, Corning, Iowa; Sherry (Roger) Stanbaugh; Hemet, California, and Janice Phillis, Villisca, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, thirteen great-great- grandchildren; and brother-in-law Glen (Dorothy) Odson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Julia and Henry Peterson; husband, Elmo Odson; brother, Harold Peterson; son-in-law, Herbert Phillis; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul (Mildred) Odson, Marvin (Mary) Odson, and Merle (Lola) Odson.
