Rev. Dr. Jeanne Groom
Jeanne Dianne Groom, the daughter of Lawrence Elton and Doloris Joan (Hill) Groom, was born on August 4, 1951 in Waterloo, Iowa. Rev. Dr. Jeanne Groom entered eternal rest on June 20, 2015 at Creston Nursing and Rehab Center, Creston, Iowa at the age of sixty-three years.
Jeanne graduated from North High School in Des Moines in 1969. She attended Grandview College for two years and received her Bachelor Degree from Drake University. Jeanne attended Christian Theological School and received a PHD from United Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1997.
Rev. Dr. Groom served as the youth minister for Capitol Hill Christian Church in Des Moines; served four years as pastor at Hynsdale, Iowa; and served four years near Sioux City, Iowa at the Pierson Christian Church. Prior to retiring, Jeanne served as pastor for twenty-six years at the Prescott United Church Disciples of Christ in Prescott, Iowa.
Rev. Dr. Groom was instrumental in organizing a community Food Bank in Highland Park and helped organize the first Crop Walk in Des Moines. She began providing educational materials in her churches for adults and also materials that were appropriate for children. While serving the United Church in Prescott, Jeanne was very proud of the live nativity scene the members did for three years. Jeanne’s goal in preaching was always to try to open the minds of her congregation. Jeanne was most recently a member of the First Christian Church in Creston.
Left to cherish Jeanne’s memory is her brother, Christopher Groom of Winterset; and her close friends, John and Priscilla Swatosh of Fenton, Missouri. Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert Groom.
