Inurnment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family in Luellas name.
Luella Mae Kingery, the daughter of Edward Alex and Glendora Fern (Shields) Thompson, was born on November 20, 1927, south of Afton in Union County, Iowa. Luella entered eternal rest on January 3, 2008, at the Afton Care Center, Afton, Iowa, at the age of 80.
Luella grew up on a farm south of Afton until moving to Des Moines in 1943. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines with the Class of 1945. After a brief stay in Idaho, she returned to Afton in 1946.
On June 8, 1947, Luella married Harold Keith Kingery in Des Moines and they made their home in the Afton area. Four children were born to bless this union.
Luella enjoyed being a homemaker and worked alongside Harold on their dairy farm. Through the years she also worked in Afton as a grocery store clerk, an egg candler, and an Avon Representative until recently. She was a very active 50 year member of the Royal Rebekah Lodge #47. Another love of hers was being a 4-H leader for 20 years.
Luella received an award in 1992 from the Governor for her volunteer work; she drove countless people to their doctor appointments in Des Moines, Iowa City or wherever they needed to go. Luella loved to listen to country music, do jigsaw puzzles, quilt, and read. She was also known around Union County for decorating wedding cakes and other special occasions.
Luella is preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Dorothy Thompson, and several aunts and uncles.
Left to cherish Luellas memory is her husband, Harold Kingery, Afton; two daughters: Linda (husband Jim) Lewis, Ankeny and Connie (husband Les) Schreurs, Afton; two sons: Martin (wife Deb) Kingery, Afton and Duane (wife Diane) Kingery, Eagle Grove, Iowa; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters: Reva Dunner, Bullhead City, Arizona and Sharon Leas, Ames, Iowa; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
