On November 10, 2021 Mary Smith passed away while at the University of Iowa Hospital. She was born on August 6, 1946 in Creston, Iowa. Her parents were Joseph Hawks and Margaret (Treanor) Hawks. Mary grew up on a farm north of Creston. After graduation from high school she attended Southwestern Community College for two years and finished her teaching degree at the University of Northern Iowa. She eventually received her master’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. She was an elementary school teacher in Creston for 30-plus years.
Mary was a kindhearted, giving, and faithful woman. You could always find her busy on the farm (tending to the garden, mowing the yard) or attending family events. She was hardworking and passed that on to all of her family. Mary was very proud of her children and so very proud of her 12 grandchildren. She touched so many lives in a positive way with her guidance and love.
While Mary was going to school at SWCC she met Ron Smith, and they were united in marriage on June 8, 1968. They raised four children Brian, Bobbie, Stacy, and Kim. Mary was survived by her husband Ron, son Brian Smith (Shawn), daughter Bobbie Hoffman (Daniel), daughter Stacy Hanson (Aaron), daughter Kim Schulte (Brandon), 10 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, sister Regina Day (Bob), sister Julie Black (Val), and sister Ellen Reece (Ken), many nieces and nephews, and friends from all over. Mary is preceded in death by her father, mother, brother Bill Hawks, nephews Ed Day, Chuck Day and Steve Hawks.
