Myron Russell Shires was born December 28, 1944 to Donald and Hallene (O’Riley) Shires in Villisca, Iowa. He started school in Nodaway before the family moved to Prescott Iowa. Here the family settled for many years and Myron graduated from Prescott Community School with the Class of 1962. During high school he was an accomplished saxophone player and performed in dance bands. Myron was ornery and loved an adventure. As a teenager, while being left at home to milk the cows while his parents went on vacation, he hitchhiked his way to Texas.
On January 27, 1962 Myron married his high school sweetheart and love of his life Jannis Tucker. To this union were born five children: Darwin Eugene, Donna Hallene, Debora Kay, Donald William and Danny Russell. Myron farmed with his dad in the Prescott area before moving to Nodaway to begin farming on his own. The family then returned to Prescott where he began working for Terra Chemical. After accepting a job with Terra’s farming operations, the family moved to Mt. Ayr. Myron later worked for “The Ranch” south of Mt. Ayr before the family moved to Hawaii where Myron continued his love of farming by raising sweet corn. The family returned to Prescott where he began working for the City taking care of the water, wastewater and streets. At this time, he also drove a school bus. He greatly enjoyed his interactions with the kids on the bus. After retirement, Myron and Jan moved to Weslaco, Texas where they had the benefit of warmer weather and many new friendships.
Myron was baptized in the Prescott Methodist Church and had a strong faith. He was a member of the Circle Lodge #555 for over 50 years. He also was a member of the Prescott School Board for 14 years and served as President for many of those. Myron was a fierce checker and cribbage opponent. He especially loved his children and grandchildren who affectionately called him Grandpa Stinky or Grandpa Poopie.
Myron passed away March 16, 2021 at EveryStep Hospice in Creston, Iowa lovingly surrounded by his family.
