Richard Dick Ashenfelter

Richard “Dick” Dean Ashenfelter, son of Vern Lee and Bernice Birdie (Kepner) Ashenfelter, was born on October 9, 1927 in Corning, Iowa. Dick passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at the Corning Nursing and Rehab Center in Corning, Iowa at the age of eighty-six years, one month and fifteen days.
On April 22, 1950, Dick was united to Betty Lou Hartman and five children were born to bless this union: Janet, Susan, Larry, Donald and a son, Allen that died in infancy.
Dick honorably served our country during the Korean War Conflict in the United States Marine Corp in 1952.
Dick was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, deer hunting and trapping. He spent his entire adult life in the shoe repair business and purchased the business after his fathers’ death in 1996. The business was later called Ashenfelter Repair Store. It was here that he “mended rips, patched the holes, built up heels and saved the soles”.
Dick was a member for fifty-nine years in the Corning American Legion OURCQ Post #117. He was also a member in the Corning Gun Club, Corning Bow Benders, Corning Christian Church, Iowa Trappers Organization, National Trappers Organization and the Tri-County Pool League.
Dick lived his entire life in Adams County and embraced the Corning community, making many dear friends throughout his lifetime. His positive energy and contagious smile brought joy to all that knew him. He will dearly be missed by many.
Left to cherish Dick’s memory are his wife, Betty Ashenfelter; children: Janet (John) Buzzard, Sr. of Shenandoah, IA, Susan (Ron) Hickman, Sr. of Grandview, MO, Larry Ashenfelter of Corning, IA and Donald (Dawn) Ashenfelter of Corning, IA; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, brother, Edward (Lorraine “Kit”) Ashenfelter of Hazelwood, MO; two nephews; one niece and other relatives and friends.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and his infant son, Allen Ashenfelter.
