Robert Mason

Robert Gene Mason, known fondly as Bob, passed away on March 23, 2025, at his home in Afton, Iowa. He was born on October 27, 1945, in Coffeyville, Kansas. Bob graduated high school in Bushnell, Illinois, with the Class of 1964, and continued his education at Sanburn College in Galesburg, Illinois.

Bob enlisted in the United States Marine Corps immediately after graduation and served bravely during the Vietnam War from September 1, 1964, until his honorable discharge on July 12, 1968. His military service was an integral part of his life and character.

A skilled carpenter, Bob was self-employed and earned the nickname "wizard of wood" for his exceptional craftsmanship. In addition to his carpentry work, he also spent several years working for Wellman Dynamics in Creston and previously at Wausau Homes in Corning, Iowa.

On September 5, 1986, Bob was united in marriage to Betty Lee Cline in Creston, Iowa. Together, they built a loving family that includes their daughter, Jessica (Jerry) Knearem of Shelbyville, Illinois; step-daughter, Janet (Paul) Sickels of Creston, Iowa; and step-son, Larry Craig of Creston, Iowa. Bob was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren and a great-grandfather to fifteen great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Mason of Afton, Iowa; his brother, James Mason of Indianola, Iowa; and his sister, Barbara Woosley of Leon, Iowa. Bob also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis Clifford and Zella Maxine (Owens) Mason; a grandson, Chris Lowe; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Goodrich; and his sister-in-law, Stephanie Mason.

Visitation will be held on March 28, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center in Creston, Iowa. A graveside service will follow on March 31, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Creston Animal Rescue Effort.
