Ruth Anne Swartz, daughter to Raymond Verne and Edna Maude (Bissell) Scott, was born November 7, 1926 in Corning, Iowa. Ruth entered eternal rest on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of eighty-six years, eight months and eleven days.
In 1944, Ruth graduated from Corning High School. She taught rural school for three and a half years until she was united in marriage to Byron “Barney” Swartz on May 18, 1947 at the Corning Methodist Church. Two children were born to this union: Marilyn Ruth and Daniel Dean.
Ruth and Barney farmed in Adams County about ten years. Ruth worked at several restaurants in Corning over the years.
Ruth was an avid reader, a member of the Corning American Legion Auxiliary and a life-long resident of the Corning community. Ruth enjoyed gardening and especially her large vegetable garden to help feed her large family and hired farm hands.
Left to cherish Ruth’s memory are her children: Marilyn Banning of Carrizozo, New Mexico and Dan (Denise) Swartz of Corning, Iowa; three grandsons: Jeff (Shelly) Williams of Kansas City, Kansas, Tracey (Mary) Williams of Waterloo, Iowa and Justin (Sarah) Williams of San Antonio, Texas; thirteen great-grandchildren; brothers: Gerald (Lois) Scott of Clearfield, Iowa, Ed (Sharon) Scott of Corning, Iowa and Marvin Dee Scott of Seattle, Washington; sisters: Ildah (Clifford) Brown of Corning, Iowa and Norma O’Riley of Denver, Colorado, her dear friend, Doris Cooney and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Byron Swartz; brother, Claire Scott; brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Lois Scott; sister and brother-in-law, Doloris and Sam Hollander; sister-in-law, Betty Scott and brother-in-law, John O’Riley.
