Steven Zimmerman

Steve Zimmerman, 66 of Creston, entered eternal rest Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at Unity Point Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. No services are planned per Steve’s request. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in Steven’s name. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Prescott, Iowa.
Steven Craig Zimmerman was born July 30, 1954 in Lemmon, South Dakota, the son of Ervin Tyler and Clotene Adaline (Kilgore) Zimmerman. When Steve was 8 years old, the family moved to Prescott, Iowa where Steve attended school and graduated with the Class of 1973. Following graduation, Steve worked at the Prescott Elevator and also worked at the Stringtown Gas Station performing numerous duties. Later, he began providing Tiling services to many people in the area. During this time in his life, he met Shelley Allbaugh and the couple was married on March 10, 1995 in Prescott, Iowa. Their three children came as a package deal with this union: Jami, Karen and Rusty.
Steve and Shelley started their own business, Zimmerman Trenching. Together, they owned and operated the business from 1994-2001. Steve then began a 17 year career driving a cement truck for American Concrete, retiring in 2017. During retirement, Steve and Shelley sold fresh produce from their home. Steve was a jack-of-all-trades and was very handy at fixing things. He was known as “papa” to many people and would always lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Family always came first and Steve was a loving husband and father. He also loved his black and tan coon hounds.
Steve volunteered his time raising $171,000 for the HERO Organization – Healing at English River Outfitters. An organization that helped military veterans with their rehabilitation needs. Steve was also active in the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He was active in the local, state and national levels and served a one-year term as the State President from 2018-2019.
Preceding Steve in death were his parents; infant brother, Russell Zimmerman; his mother-in-law and father-in-law: Jake and Darlene Allbaugh; 2 sisters-in-law: Janice Besaw and Debbie Allbaugh; son-in-law, Joe Barber.
Steve is survived by his wife and best friend, Shelley Zimmerman of Creston; his children: Jami Vandevender of Prescott, IA, Karen Barber (significant other, Gabe McWilliams) of Creston and Rusty (wife Hillary) Zimmerman also of Creston; 9 grandchildren: Breanna, Brittany and Zoey Vandevender; Shelby, Wyatt, Kal and Danikka Barber; Joselyn McWilliams; and Emerson Zimmerman; 2 great-grandchildren: Melody and Mia Earley; Steve is also survived by a brother, Dennis (wife Helen Kay) Zimmerman of Anita, IA; 2 sisters: Joyce Jones of Des Moines, IA and Peggy Zimmerman of Des Moines, IA; 2 nieces, 1 nephew and numerous “adopted” children and grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
