Unity Hixinbaugh, 95, of Riverside, California, formerly of Creston, died Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at Kaiser Hospital, in Riverside. Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, March 22, at the Graceland Cemetery Chapel south of Creston. Rev. Philip Coe, First Christian Church, will officiate. No visitation is planned. Memorials can be made in her name.
Unity Frances Hixinbaugh, the daughter of Daniel Joseph and Frances Lanora (Evans) Hixinbaugh, was born on September 4, 1914, at the Unity Hospital in Creston, Iowa. Unity was a high school teacher for forty years and had a Masters Degree. Unity was the first of the family to move to Southern California, where she taught high school physical education in Corona. After her fathers death, Unity persuaded her Mother, and her sisters Jessie, Irene, and Loretta to move to California and live together in Riverside, California.
As a P.E. teacher at Corona, “Coach Hix” inspired in a generation of young women the values of fitness, sportsmanship, and willingness to compete. Unity and her sisters were members of the First Christian Church in Riverside. Unity was deeply involved in congregational activities, holding various offices, including co-Chairing the Worship Department and serving as a member of the Diaconate. Unity and her sisters were also avid travelers, especially as they reached retirement.
