Vaughn was born in Ravenwood, Missouri, May 8th, 1919. She was the daughter of Leland and Neva (Grantham) Fryar. Vaughn graduated from Ravenwood High School in 1937.
On April 22nd, 1938 she married the love of her life, Dave Seckington in Troy, Kansas. Dave and Vaughn lived in Missouri until 1945 when they moved to Creston, Iowa to run Mahan Hardware. In 1957 they purchased Mahan Hardware, and it became Seckington’s True Value. Vaughn worked at the store and in 1967 she added a toy and gift section to Seckington’s. During these years Dave and Vaughn added three children to their family, Carolyn Sue, Larry Lee, and Norma Louise.
Dave passed away in 1982, and it was then that Vaughn found a real passion for volunteering and giving back to her community. Over the years, Vaughn sat with over 100 hospice patients, provided respite to families, helped run Meals on Wheels through Greater Regional Hospital until the program ended, and spent countless hours volunteering and making food for the Creston First United Methodist Church. She was acknowledged for her years of community service throughout her life. In 1997 she was Creston’s Citizen of the Year, in 2004 she was nominated by Annette Rice, and was awarded the Iowa State Fair Iowan of the Day, and in 2019 at the age of 100, she was honored to be one of Creston’s 4th of July Parade Marshalls. Vaughn was a member of the Creston First United Methodist Church for 78 years, Creston PEO for over 33 years, and Chautauqua for 70 years.
Vaughn enjoyed traveling and took several trips with friends to Elder Hostels. Her favorite trip was to Jerusalem, and being baptized in the Jordan River when she was 71 years old. If asked, Vaughn would say spending time with family was her favorite thing to do, playing dominoes or cards, having tea parties, playing castle, barrel of monkeys, and attending or watching the many activities of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, or great- great-grandchildren. Vaughn’s kitchen was always open and had an endless supply of food. She was known for her fried chicken, good salad, and gooseberry pie. She would always ask if you needed more to eat so you would stay longer. Vaughn cherished her role as a wife, mother of three, and Grandmother to 33. She was a role model, prayer warrior, and always shared her love for her Lord Jesus Christ.
