Family will greet friends at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 1, one hour prior to the service at Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, Iowa. Memorials may be made in the name of Verlea J. Sands to be decided at a later date.
Verlea J. Sands, the daughter of Art and Hazel (Christie) Gay, was born on October 7, 1932, at Carbon, Iowa. Verlea entered eternal rest on June 27, 2008, at the Creston Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Creston, Iowa, at the age of seventy-five years, eight months, and ten days.
Verlea lived in Carbon, Corning and Villisca. She graduated from Corning High School. In 1951, she married Dewey Carpenter. She later married Don Sands. Verlea worked at Union Carbide in Red Oak for twenty-seven years and was a homemaker. Verlea always loved her pets, many cats and dogs, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Left to cherish Verleas memory are her children: Dewey Carpenter, Jr., Red Oak; Jennifer (husband Harry) Walters, Creston; Jay Carpenter, Portalos, NM; Jack Carpenter, Colorado Springs, CO; and Donavon (wife Joni) Sands; Red Oak, IA; Fourteen Grandchildren; and one Great-Grandson; her sister: Ruth Gay, Villisca, Iowa; her brothers: Clayton Gay, Villisca, IA; Ron Gay, Villisca, IA; and Don (wife Carolyn) Gay, Gilroy, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding Verlea in death were her parents: Hazel and Art Gay; and her son: John Carpenter.
